Lomography 101

I recently joined Lomomanila at Yahoogroups. Part of their welcome e-mail are some interesting information about that one thing this group is about: the Love for Lomography. I thought of sharing these things to you guys. Malay mo, maging Lomo converts din kayo :)

What is LOMO? LOMO is a manufacturer of optical equipment in Russia. It stands for Leningradskoye Optiko Mechanichesckoye Obyedinenie (Leningrad Optical Mechanical Union).

What is the LOMO LCA? The Lomo LCA (Lomo Compact Automat) is a camera manufactured by Lomo.

What is LOMOGRAPHY? LOMOGRAPHY is a movement marketed by the Lomographic Society, Inc. The movement was inspired by the LOMO LCA. Two Austrian students "discovered" and were enamored by the qualities in photos taken by the LCA and proceeded to establish this movement by means of viral marketing. They coined the term "Lomography" and drafted the 10 Rules of Lomography. Read more about Lomography at www.lomography.com

Is LOMOGRAPHY officially part of the LOMO company? No. Lomography is an independent movement involving the Lomo LCA. The Lomographic Society, Inc. deals with Lomo in a supplier-client relationship. THe LSI merely markets the Lomo LCA as part of their movement.

Can you use other cameras in Lomography? While the LCA was the camera that started the whole Lomography movement by the Lomographic Society, there are other cameras now included in the LSI's catalog of "lomographic" cameras. This means, the LSI considers these cameras as tools that are suited to the 10 rules of lomography. Some of these cameras are: Holga, Supersampler (designed and manufactured by LSI), and Actionsampler.

Some of these cameras have been existing way before the LSI was established (i.e. Holga) and were in no way "made" by the LSI. They were simply adopted by lomography enthusiasts because of their nature. Many of these cameras are toy cameras.

Where can I get cameras?

1) www.lomography.com
2) www.ebay.com
3) www.lomomods.com

FYI: Not all cameras should be called 'LOMO CAMERAS' because Lomo, being a brand, is only applied to cameras that do use LOMO optics such as the Lomo LCA and Lubitel.

The more accurate term for plastic cameras like the Supersampler, ActionSampler, HOlga, and other similar cameras is TOY CAMERA. (Or Lomographic camera.
